vote iconHow to vote

The UK General Election uses the First Past The Post system.

  • You will receive 1 ballot paper.
  • You should mark an ‘X’ against the one candidate you want to elect to represent your constituency.

When votes are counted, the candidate who receives the most votes is elected as MP for your constituency.

There are 3 different ways you can vote. How you vote is up to you.

1 Vote in person at a polling station

Most people vote in person at a polling station. However, if you are not able to go to the polling station in person on election day, you can apply to vote by post or by proxy (someone voting on your behalf).

2 Vote by post

If you cannot get to a polling station you can apply for a postal vote.

If you live in the Epping Forest district you need to complete an 'application to vote by post' form.

All postal voters have to provide some personal details in order to make postal voting at elections secure and guard against fraud. As part of this process all postal vote applications must include a signature and date of birth. The information on the forms is stored electronically and used to compare against the signature and date of birth given on the statement to be returned with your postal vote at all elections.

3 Vote by proxy

If you are unable to vote in person, you can apply to vote by proxy (someone else voting on your behalf). You can apply to vote by proxy, for a set period of time or for all future elections.

You can apply for a proxy vote as long as you are on the electoral register. When you apply for a proxy vote you have to provide a reason.

To apply for a proxy vote contact our Elections Team using the details below.
