Food and Garden Recycling Service

Introduction to Food and Garden Recycling Scheme

The food and garden recycling service is collected via a 180 litre green lidded wheeled bin.

The food and garden waste wheeled bin can take all the cooked and uncooked food waste including bones, tea bags, from your kitchen and also your bio-degradable garden waste.

You should also have a kitchen caddy for the storage of your food leftovers before you put the waste into your green lidded wheelie bin. Kitchen caddies are neat, small, plastic containers (see picture below) designed to sit on your kitchen worktop. They can be stored in your cupboard and provide a day to day receptacle for your food waste. Then, as and when you choose, you simply transfer your food from the kitchen caddy into your green lidded wheeled bin.

Please do not put anything but compostable food waste bags displaying the seeding logo  or paper into the green lidded wheeled bin.

Any plastic bags or anything that is not bio-degradable will be deemed as a contaminate and will not be emptied.  All bio-degradable food/garden waste collected is sent for composting.  Any items/materials put in the green lidded wheeled bin that are not bio-degradable will be treated as a contaminate.  Your bin will not be emptied if contaminates are present.  The collection crew will put a contamination sticker on the bin indicating why the bin has not been emptied.  If you find one of these stickers on your bin please remove all non-bio-degradable items/materials and re-present your bin for collection on your next collection day.

Introduction to Food and Garden RecyclingThe food we needlessly throw away ends up in landfill sites.  (If not disposed off in the green lidded wheeled bin).  It is estimated that as consumers we throw away 1/3 of all the food we buy. This means that one in every three shopping bags we fill at our local supermarket ends up in our refuse.

As the food rots in landfill it emits harmful gases. It is estimated that in the United Kingdom rotting food in landfill sites generates the same CO2 as emitted by every fifth car on UK roads. It’s not just CO2 and methane that’s released when the food goes to landfill that’s the problem, but also the energy spent producing, storing and transporting the food to us. Reducing the impact of this form of pollution is very important.

By collecting food waste the council can avoid financial penalties in the coming years for sending biodegradable waste to landfill.

The service is available to all properties that currently have a wheelie bin collection for domestic waste. If you live in a flat and would like more information please contact us on 01992 564608.
