Food and Garden - How to Use the Service

Food and Garden Service

Every property in the Epping Forest district has a food and garden wheelie bin (180 litre) together with a small green kitchen caddy (5 litre).

The small kitchen caddy can be used for day-to-day use in the kitchen to store cooked and uncooked food prior to transfer to the wheelie bin.

New residents will receive an information pack will be delivered to each household together with the wheeled bin and kitchen caddy giving more details about the service.

Most people find wheelie bins very convenient. However, there may be some properties where they are not practical. In these special circumstances, following an assessment, we will be able to provide a smaller (25 litre) kerbside caddy which will only take food waste. This is a larger version of the kitchen caddy and should comfortably take a week's worth of food waste. This will be collected every week.

The food and garden waste wheeled bin (180 litre) or large kerbside caddy (25 litre) should be presented on the boundary of your property by 7am on the day of collection. The wheeled bin or kerbside caddy will be collected on the same day as your recycling collection. Please do not present the kitchen caddy for collection.

Please make sure you DO NOT excessively compact your food and garden bin.  Also please ensure the bin is able to be moved and emptied safely, otherwise you may be asked to remove some of its contents to enable collection and emptying.

If you still dispose of your food and garden waste in your black bin, this means your food rots in a landfill site and it emits harmful gases.  It is estimated that in the United Kingdom rotting food in a landfill site generates the same CO2 as emitted by every fifth car on UK roads.  It is not just CO2 and methane that is released when the food goes to landfill that is the problem, but also the energy spent producing, storing and transporting the food. Reducing the impact of this form of pollution is very important.

By recycling your food and garden waste via the green lidded wheeled bin, Epping Forest District Council can avoid financial penalties in the coming years for sending bio-degradable waste to landfill.  The food and garden recycling collection service is available to all properties that currently have a wheeled bin collection for domestic waste.  If you live in a flat and would like more information please contact us on 01992 564608.

If you do choose to line your wheeled bin or caddy you must follow the guidelines below.

Please do not use any type of plastic bags to line your wheeled bin or caddies.

Newspaper can be used to wrap food waste in before depositing into the wheeled bin and can also be used to line your caddy. Please see attached file below.
