Independent living homes get digital upgrade

Over 600 independent living properties have had their emergency alarm system upgraded ready for the digital switchover.

We have successfully upgraded 14 independent living schemes with over 480 properties, and a further 120 designated dwellings for older people in the community, from analogue to digital. All now have the most up to date emergency alarm system and alarm monitoring service.

Enhanced safety and support

The upgrade has extra bonuses, the new systems can be linked to peripherals such as fall detectors, medication reminders, property exit sensors, smart doorbells and flood detectors, and a lot more. These peripherals can improve the quality of life for vulnerable people with timely alerts and assistance.

The council’s Independent Living Team worked with the Telecare Services Association (TSA) to help ensure the upgrade is fit for purpose and value for money.

Residents were consulted at emergency alarm surgeries and they were also invited to attend a supplier event day. Staff from the Independent Living Team were on hand to support residents through the upgrade process. They are delighted with the speed emergency alarm calls are answered. One resident at Jubilee Court feels the new system is sleek and modern.

Future-proofing our digital networks

I’m pleased to report that all independent living homes in the Epping Forest district have been changed from analogue to digital, enhancing the safety and support for our residents and helping them to remain independent for as long as possible.

Going digital brings so many benefits. Improved call quality and security, supporting modern services like high-speed internet and video calling, as well as the hidden benefits of linking peripherals like fall detectors, smart doorbells and flood detectors .

Future-proofing our digital networks means we are better equipped to meet the districts future technological changing needs.

What is the digital switchover?

Between now and 2027 telephone providers will be moving their customers from old analogue landlines to new upgraded digital landline services using fibre technology, this move is known as the digital switchover.

Before your phone line changes your telephone provider such as Virgin Media, O2 or BT will contact you. If you have an internet connection, the change may be as simple as plugging your phone into your broadband router rather than the socket on the wall.

Do you need help?

The digital switchover poses challenges for vulnerable people, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities.

If you are vulnerable, please contact your provider (who you pay your phone bill to) as soon as possible. Make sure your provider knows about your needs and circumstances.
