Pupils from Epping Primary School joined Members of Epping Forest District Council’s Cabinet and representatives from Pellikaan Construction, on Wednesday 9 October for a site visit at the new Epping Leisure Centre.

Since the groundbreaking ceremony, in March of this year, Pellikaan has completed:

  • Excavation works
  • Sheet pilling and Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles
  • Below ground drainage
  • Laying concrete for basement floor slabs, retaining walls and shells that will form both swimming pools

10,000m3 of soil

To get this point, Pellikaan has removed approximately 10,000 cubic metres of soil from the site, installed 225 tonnes of steel reinforcement and poured 2,400 cubic metres of concrete.

The next milestone is to erect the structural steelwork. This will give a more visible feel for the size and shape of the building.

Epping Primary School

Staff and pupils from Epping Primary School have been involved with the project from the start; providing a time capsule at the groundbreaking ceremony, containing objects to represent life in Epping today. GPS coordinates will record exactly where the capsule is buried, and a mounted plaque on the finished leisure centre will mark the spot.

Taking shape

Cllr Ray Balcombe, Cabinet Member for Contracts Delivery said:

I am thrilled to see the new leisure centre taking shape. The team at Pellikaan is doing a fantastic job, enduring all weathers to keep the project on track.

The new centre is a great example of how Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) is investing in the community’s health and wellbeing, and the district’s future.

Wonderful resource

Council Leader, Cllr Chris Whitbread said:

It’s remarkable to see the changes on site from my last visit only a few months ago. I’m excited for Epping to get this wonderful resource that will provide additional employment opportunities and help to boost the local economy.

New leisure centre

The new Epping Leisure Centre is due to open at the end of 2025. It will replace the existing Epping Sports Centre, in Hemnall Street.

New facilities will include:

  • A main swimming pool
  • A learner pool
  • Sports hall
  • Health and fitness gym
  • Studios
  • Squash courts

Epping Leisure Centre is being delivered by EFDC in partnership with Places Leisure and Pellikaan Construction Ltd.

Places Leisure manages all the district’s leisure centres on behalf of the council.

Pellikaan Construction is carrying out the construction work for the new centre.
