North Weald Airfield Museum
North Weald Airfield Museum is a registered charity, run and staffed by volunteers.
It is home to a unique collection of artefacts, photographs and personal memories. Visitors can see veteran and classic aircraft based on the airfield, such as the Spitfire, land and take-off. They can also visit the impressive RAF North Weald Memorial dedicated to all who served at North Weald.
The museum has a room dedicated to the Battle of Britain. It commemorates the historic event and the 39 aircrew killed flying from RAF North Weald as well as those who died due to the hundreds of bombs dropped on and around the airfield.
The former Station Office is now home to the NWAMA Collection. This extensive collection of photographs and artefacts tell the story of the airfield and its people from 1916 to the present day. This includes the 2 American ‘Eagle’ Squadrons and 331 and 332 Squadrons of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, who were stationed there during its history. As well as the renowned 72 Squadron, 604 (County of Middlesex) Squadron, 601 (County of London) Squadron and the famous Treble One Squadron, which flew Hunters in the famous Black Arrows formation aerobatics team.
The museum tells the story of the unique Obelisk, erected in 1952 by the people of Norway to show their gratitude to the people of North Weald. It commemorates the Norwegian airmen based at the airfield during the Second World War.
Graves of airmen and other service personnel killed in enemy attacks on the airfield can be seen in the Commonwealth War Graves section at North Weald Parish Church. It is an extremely moving experience.
The museum documents the advent of the new jet age and the North Weald air shows, a popular feature at the airfield since the RAF left North Weald in 1958.
